Ben Sherman was founded by Arthur Benjiman Sugarman in 1963. Sugarman had emigrated to the United States in 1946 and he opened his first clothes factory on his return to England. The collared, buttoned shirts which made Ben Sherman famous were introduced when Sugarman realised that the style was becoming popular, but the only way to buy the shirts was from people who imported the shirts from America. The Ben Sherman brand grew in popularity very quickly, especially because they used higher quality materials than the American brands. The first Ben Sherman store was opened in Brighton in 1967, Sugarman remained in control until 1975 when he sold the business and retired to Australia. Today Ben Sherman is an iconic brand who produce shirts, suits, belts, wallets, bags and watches.
